The short version. You can use The Music Arcade without an account. There are no adverts. Google Analytics only sets cookies if you say yes. The microphone tools listen inside your browser and never record or upload your sound. If you make an account, I keep what you save so you can find it again, and I’ll delete it whenever you ask.
The Music Arcade (themusicarcade.com) is run by William Troy, a music teacher in Ireland. I decide what happens to the information on this site. To ask anything about your data, email williamtroymusic@gmail.com.
The site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people use. When you first arrive, a banner asks whether that’s OK. Until you choose Accept, Google Analytics sets no cookies; it can still send Google anonymous, cookieless signals that a page was viewed. Advertising features are switched off, whatever you choose.
Your choice is remembered in your own browser, not on my side. You can change it here:
Done. The banner will ask again on the next page.
Some tools listen to you play: the Tuner, Play It Back, Pitch Practice, the Listening Lab, Note Hopper and the play-along modes in the Melody Trainer and courses. Your browser asks your permission first. The sound is analysed on your own device to work out which note you played. It is never recorded, saved or sent anywhere.
Without an account, things like your course progress, practice scores, tunebook and settings are kept in your browser’s own storage on your device. They don’t come to me. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes them.
An account is optional. It lets you keep your work and pick it up on another device. Accounts are run on Supabase, a database service, and the data is stored on servers in Ireland. I keep:
Your password is handled by Supabase; I can’t see it. Account emails (confirming your address, resetting your password) are sent through Resend, an email service.
Some things are public because you choose to share them: songs you publish to The Charts appear with your username, a name or initials you enter for a high score appear on that game’s leaderboard, and tunes you add as “public” can be seen by other Melody Trainer users.
Teacher accounts can keep a timetable and lesson notes, share sheet music with their own students, and send lesson emails. What a teacher enters about their students is stored in that teacher’s account and only they can see it, except sheet music they share with a linked student, which that student can see. Lesson emails go out through Resend to the addresses the teacher enters, and replies go to the teacher.
Pro and course purchases are handled by Lemon Squeezy, which sells on my behalf. Your card details go to them, never to me. I only receive what’s needed to unlock your purchase, such as your email address and what you bought.
Like any website, loading these pages means your browser sends your internet address to the services that deliver them:
Analytics cookies and the microphone: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. Your account, saved work and purchases: to provide what you signed up for. Keeping the site running and secure: my legitimate interest in doing so.
Account data is kept until you ask me to delete it. Anything in your browser stays until you clear it. Analytics data is kept by Google for at most 14 months, the longest Google Analytics allows.
You can ask me for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete your account and everything in it. Email williamtroymusic@gmail.com from the address on your account. If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your data, you can complain to Ireland’s Data Protection Commission.
Lots of the people who use this site are young students. Everything except saving and sharing works without an account. If you’re under 16, please ask a parent or guardian before making one.
